Charlie with a great streamer brown!

It’s been a tough week all around!  Cold weather had the hatch and bugs stalled, while the rain and higher water fed the fish…We had awesome streamer action for a few days and then the fish started acting like they where full?  It was slow fishing a few days over the last week.  Plus, I was sick for several days and was on the “side lines” getting better.  But, I am back to 100% and the weather is starting to warm up to more “normal” June weather!  WE are moving in the right direction!!!

HEX HATCH

Hexes have been hatching on the right evenings, but it should just keep improving with the warmer weather.  Very excited for the next few weeks…I will be out there chasing the hatch with or without clients!  We have guides and lodging available…give us a call to book 231-745-3529.  We have guides available this weekend and everyday next week…great opportunity to float the river and catch the hex hatch!

The river is in great shape right now.  Almost back to normal flows and still holding a slight stain in the middle and lower sections.  It looks like we have a couple more days of cooler weather and then it heats up Friday for a long period…..”game on!”

HEX!

The fishing has been up and down over the last week.  Very tough at moments and then explosive dry fly takes at times…knocking on doors, watching the river and keeping the faith has paid off for me most days/nights.  The night time hatches (Gray drakes, some ISO’s, giant stones, yellow sallies and hex) are all popping!  This is the time of year we have been waiting for and dreaming about…short days and long nights!  Watching the water and hunting the river for trophy trout on dry flies.

Craig and Ray capitalized during a brief hatch on a cool night

Can’t fish the evening hatch….try banging the banks with bigger dries (you might be surprised what jumps out of the river to grab your fly!!!).  Watch a grassy bank with damsels fluttering around, you might catch a great fish in the middle of the day…timing is everything!  Not getting any bites…try going sub-surface with nymphs, swinging soft hackles or small streamers.  Or better yet…not getting any bites; enjoy sitting on the bank of a trout stream and watching the water.  You have options…try making the most of them and enjoying being on the river.  I am excited for what’s coming up and I would love to show you why!

Mousing has been a grind on the cold evenings while the water was up.  But that should also improve with the heat and dropping water levels.  The moon is 1/2 full and getting larger every night…it’s been bright out there!

The banks are coming alive…ants, spiders, moths, damsels…you get the picture.  Those are all a staple food source for trout.  It’s not too early to start searching with rubber-legged dries and/or twitch bugs.  I love trout fishing and what we have in front of us!  It’s magical!!!  Sitting on the bank (or boat) waiting, watching, hunting the river for rising trout…heaven on earth!!!  After all these years of trout fishing it never gets old; it never is the same, it never is predictable, it never is dependable, it never is repeatable, it never is describable; yet, it never disappoints, it is always memorable and you are driven for the next outing!!!   2026 trout season is here and going to be fantastic!!!

Good luck out there!!!

Later,

John
