I figured it was about time I posted something instead of just having all this fun. The river is in great shape at the moment with just a little height and stain; not so much as to keep the trout from looking up, but just enough for the Steelhead (Of which there were still plenty as of two days ago) to be less spooky…
Trout opener shenanigans…
Judging by some post I saw on-line as well as a few personal accounts the conditions made the trout opener tough for many, but we had a great time hanging out with great friends as usual enjoying the company, the food and the obligatory beverages; besides that, we actually found a few trout that would play with us and others that teased, but wouldn’t commit.
As far as hatches go I’ve seen a wide variety popping up here recently to include BWOs, some light and darker caddis, Hendricksons and stoneflies with a few fish looking up to them here and there, but I have yet to personally witness a bunch of fish looking up all at once. (Could easily be happening however…) Streamer action has been very solid at times depending on the day, weather and pressure (Both barometric and angler! ;^) and the early mousers, something I like to think I was involved in pioneering back in the day, have already been going at it from what I understand… I always used to say that you can start “mousing” (Waking a big fly at night, you don’t necessarily need tall grass or even actual mice.) as soon as you see the first trout rise to anything and it always held pretty true.
It hasn’t all been about fishing for me here lately!
I’ve got just a little over a month before I leave my family for 2 1/2 months of hard work (And fun! ;^) in Alaska for the summer so I’m squeezing in that bride time whenever it works out and we are enjoying our motorsports together. Seems like the blessing of the bikes is sneaking right up here also then shortly after that Jake will house sit for us while we are gone for a combination family reunion and riding trip. I’m not sure that I will have even one full day upon return from that before I depart again for AK. (BTW - WE STILL HAVE OPENINGS FOR OUR BBT WEEK IN ALASKA! DETAILS BELOW. CONTACT THE SHOP TO JOIN US!! ;^)
TFO Outdoor Summit at Ray and Kate’s place!
Fun streamer rig! (PS, we can get one for ya! ;^)
I had a great “Cinco De Mayo” starting off with a trip up north for the TFO Summit and finishing with the PMTU banquette that evening. Talk about a great cast of characters! I spent the entire day amongst some of the most selfless people on the planet doing great things…
Honored to just be a part of it…
The next day found me on the water for an annual trip with Jim and Dave. We usually go earlier in the season for Steelhead but had a later date this year. Decided to look around for a few anyway and maybe mix it up a bit. Long story short, it was a great day!
Lost some, got some and had a great time! Thanks guys…
In other news, Baldwin has a new addition worth checking out… “The Worlds Largest Brown Trout Sculpture!” They are still working on the very cool landscaping around it, but the sculpture is up and it’s looking good. It’s located right downtown across from the historical society buildings by the old railroad grade. Can’t think of a better town for it than the one that got the very first Brown Trout planting in the US back on April 11, 1884.
That’s really all I’ve got for now. Not sure how many more post I’ll have in me before the family vacation, but I’ll try and update as needed. All is well, the shop is stocked, the motel has openings and so do the guides! Come on up and have some fun!!
