Hey guys, thought I’d toss up another quick one before the weekend. John was pretty informative in his last report and there’s not much new to add to it. Water is back to just about normal in the Upper River, but was still up a bit and holding a pretty good stain as of yesterday morning mid-river down… Water temp has fluctuated quite a bit but is mostly in the upper 30s now and went all the way to 44 before we got off yesterday.
A nice brown to start the morning.
Steve with another.
Sunday was fun day on the river when John, John, Steve, Charlie and I all went out for one last cocktail float as a group before the season officially kicks off for me and I have to start “adulting”! ;^) John posted pics of the only two Steelhead that were brought to hand and I, unfortunately, broke my running streak of landing a Steelhead myself on every personal outing in 2018 so far, but I did get my shots and had a few epic battles… Good times were had by all!
Once again I missed the brat making party by being out of town, but Jake took my venison and made mine for me, a brat cheers to Jake for the best batch to date!
I skipped the river on Monday, but I was productive in getting my boat, truck and gear in order for the big push ahead and then Tuesday and Wednesday found me out guiding my good friend and long time client Dennis. Dennis insists that I fish along with him when we go so it’s a really tough trip as you can see…
First spring trip and first fish, is there something wrong with this picture? ;^)
Not only is he a pretty darn good fisherman, but he is also a great net man & photographer when I am lucky enough to pick one up behind him. Even after all these years of fishing together I always feel bad when that happens, but he honestly won’t let me sit runs out insisting that he learns just as much or more by watching and I happily go along with that theory… ;^)
No brats today!
One of several trout on the day.
Medium sized clown eggs, black stones and hex nymphs all hooked fish and plenty of them. A little more company than you would normally expect for a Tuesday, (Or Wednesday for that matter) but who can blame them, it was absolutely gorgeous out and the fish were happy!
We both lost more really hot fish than I care to mention on Tuesday. This was the only other that found the net.
Happened upon our buddy Rick just as he was about to realease this guy. The day was good to them and most others we spoke with as well.
A bunch of us had a great dinner at Barski on Tuesday night followed by another epic day on the water yesterday. Once again I kicked the day off for Dennis and I by putting the first one to hand, but by day’s end we were tied on landing and Dennis had outdone me in battles with lots of hot fish!
Some fish from yesterday…
Had some “not brats” for lunch again. ;^)
There are “a few” fish out on redds here and there that we saw people fishing to or noticed in passing, but not as many as you might think. Most of the winter fish have done their thing and the majority of the new ones that we are finding in the pools are a ways out from spawning yet. Some fish are nosing around the pocket and runs near gravel now, but many are still in winter water.
John and Steve put several to the net yesterday as well, here’s a couple of those I grabbed shots of.
I’m guessing traffic will possibly be quite a bit more than usual again for this time of year this weekend between all the good reports, better than average weather and a big Steelhead tourney that the lodge is having, but there should be enough to go around for those that know where to look and hopefully everyone has a great time. Stop in the shop if you’re up, we are open at 7am now and are stocked up for the season!
My current open days thru April 15 are still March 4, 5, 6 & 11 April 10 & 15. We also have other guides available on other days as well as motel rooms if you’re interested! Give the shop a call to book a date (231-745-3529) and till next time, tight lines!
