Well, I finally got a day off and some internet time! I’ve been pretty much going nonstop since May 22nd when I took off that morning on my bike to ride to Seattle… Going to try and keep this one short as I have lots to do in a short amount of time, but suffice it to say, for the most part, it’s been a fun 24 days.
May 22 morning departure.
First leg was to Ludington and the ride over on the Badger.
Thanks again to Aaron for letting me hang out on the Bridge and play Captain for a bit! That was awesome….
All told I wound up only taking 8 days for the journey to Seattle and only really goofed off for basically two of them with my old friend Jason at Wolf Creek Anglers, but it turned out my cousin Jim was going to make Seattle on the 30th, so I opted to meet him so we could deal with the barge company together and travel to camp after.
A few random road trip shots. It was super windy and quite wet a few days thru Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming and parts of Montana…
The rest of the ride once I got into the mountains and such thru Montana, Idaho and Washington was pretty sweet! Thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Missouri river as well and it was nice to spend time with an old friend. If you’re ever in the area look up Jason at Wolf Creek Angler for your lodging, guides and fly shop needs, he’ll hook you up!
Very cool place!
Had to take a photo of this memorial bench at the put in for obvious reasons…
Caught fish on Streamers and nymphs, but only took a few photos...
Cheers Jason and thanks again!
Jim and I prepped the boat and truck for the barge at the place that crated my bike.
Plane to Anchorage.
The real fun started once we got to King Salmon and began the process of prepping both camps to be opened. Only got as far as removing a few boards from some windows and doors before Truck found a porcupine to tussle with… He took him out however!
Wasted a lot of the first day removing needles…
By the next day he was recovered and ready to go again.
The 31st to the 7th is pretty much a blur of activity and hard work. Got the beach cleaned up, the buildings ready, (Water leaks, electrical problems, sewage issues, all the normal stuff) boats in the water and running, etc, etc, etc. Shag, Nelly, Josh and I moved into camp from KTL on the 3rd, more staff showed up after that and our first guest arrived on the 7th for the Trout Opener on the 8th…
Random camp view.
My “house” in progress!
Besides working on boats and various other projects I’ve guided the past 6 days. Spent the first four on the Naknek with a few different clients then took groups across the lake to Brooks the past two. No bears over there on day one, but yesterday a few showed up and it should only pick up from here… I haven’t been taking photos like I should and don’t have any of my best fish so far, but here’s a few random shots for ya over the past week.
A couple of MANY from day one…
”Cindy” the camp fox.
Couple more fish. Don’t look so happy Gary! ;^)
First day on Brooks beach.
Caught way more Grayling than usual at Brooks, kinda cool to see them returning!
Simply put, a beautiful place!
A mom with three cubs eating a moose fawn on the beach along the way to brooks.
Bunch of these guys around right now.
A few more of the many bears we saw.
That pretty much brings you up to speed! Not the usual diary I like to write and a whole lot left out, but now that we should get back to a more normal schedule I’ll try to post weekly again Starting the Saturday after this one. I’ll be guiding the next two days then my dad and uncle are coming in for a week where I’ll be “off”, but taking them fishing and such. Looking forward to that for sure!!
Till next time, tight lines all!!
