Hey guys, I’m going to try to make this a relatively short one, but it’s time for an update for sure! We’ve been getting a little more precipitation here recently, but I don’t “expect” this latest round to do much compared to the last and all graphs (except 37) are still on the downslope as I type…

The water looks great as far down as Walhalla with a little height and a nice stain at the moment. My “guess” is that it’s good down lower (Custer, Scottville & Twin) but haven’t had any firsthand reports from down there since it was blown and dirty a few days back.

Here’s a few that I stole from the world wide web that our shop guys have caught since my last report… 😎

I moved up into the fly water for my last 3 floats. A solo “scout trip” on Sunday where I saw a few fish doing the dance that I passed up on, but got one nice brown from a pool, the 34th annual spring trip with Paul (And Chris) on Monday and my regulars Jim with his son Zach yesterday.

I’ve got a few days off (with two of them open, the 13th & 15th) before I’m scheduled for my annual three-day trip with Tom on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (Always the day before, day of and day after St. Patrick’s day.) but I’ve been informed, depending on weather, that we might not spend much time on the water those days… 🙄😅🤣 (He’s been up here fishing for a while now, has a nice place right on the river and likes being comfortable! I get it… 😎👍)

Beads, baitcasters & floats for the win with Jack!

Larger clown and chartreuse nuke eggs were good for me the past few days, but I got that bigger brown on the strip in on a good ‘ole fashioned lawyer fly (egg sucking leech) and fry patterns have been good also as well as both brown and black stones. Odds are I’ll be moving back down to at least the mid river for my next few floats running beads under floats and pitching some hardware, but we’ll see…

The annual group trip was great as always with Denny & Dan in my boat! (Yea, we missed “a few”, but it was fun!)

Shop hours are 8am to 6pm currently and we are well stocked for the season! (If you missed our 30th anniversary addition t-shirts on the pre order we do still have some in store, but several sizes are getting low so you might want to call and have one set aside while we’ve still got some. Depending on how fast those go I may still do a restock on those also.) Anyway, tons of goodies in stock for just about any means of fishing you can think of and some cool gifts and swag! Please stop in if you get a chance, we truly appreciate your support. ❤️👊 (Still taking applications for sales associates also, it’s a pretty good job as jobs go, see below for details.)

Our guides do have some open dates to fill yet during the “peak” and the motel has opening as well. Give the shop a call to check on, or book, those dates! (231) 745-3529 8am – 5pm

Anybody recognize this guy? I thought I was pretty familiar with all of the larger residents of this particular large “sandy hole” but took the picture on this side rather than his perfect one because of this very distinctive scar I’ve never seen. (Could be a newer mark too because he does look a lot like another I am acquainted with? 🤷‍♂️) Took an ESL I had been bottom bouncing an egg with on the strip in…
Good times with my great friend Paul celebrating our 34th spring run in a row! 👊💖😎👍

I’ve been limiting my personal peak season guide trips to my repeat or regular clients only for several years now in an attempt to have a few more days of rest, relaxation or just plain fun while I’m still young enough to enjoy it and it’s working, but I am open to some new business if you are down to go with my program.

So pretty I snapped two Chris! 😜👊

Part of that is that is just me getting a little more picky I guess, but I’m at that point in my career where I want to enjoy the day we’re having and what it is that we’re doing as much as the client is and some stuff, while effective at times, just doesn’t really do that for me anymore. 🤷‍♂️😅

Next spring we get to flash three/five as our gang sign!! 🤣 (Still gotta survive Argentina in May as well as some trout, salmon and fall steelhead here before that however! 😜)
Thanks to Jim and his son Zach for rolling with the program! Wish a few more of those chrome ones we found would have hit the net, but it sure was a fun time finding and fighting them… 😎👊👍

In other words, I no longer feel the need to be the guy with the best “numbers” at the end of the day, but I will do my best to put you on all the fish that I can in a manner that we can all be happy with and proud of at the end of that day… (All of our other guides are “normal” and not as picky or selfish as I am however! 🙄😅 They are usually keen to go with whatever legal methods make you happy or, you want to learn, so don’t let my personal little pet peeves steer you away from any of them by any means! 😎)

I actually snuck in an afternoon ride on ‘Ole Glory here on Monday after my trip, but looks like that might be a one off for a while again now…
Speaking of ‘Ole Glory… Here’s a low-resolution rendering of the latest veil for my new boat! (The last one didn’t fit quite right so this one should arrive tomorrow.)

That’s about all I’ve got for you right now. Seems like there’s a pretty decent amount of fish around in all stages of the game from bright new to battle scared and spawning! Water temps have been hovering in the mid to high 40s and most of those fish are hot, hard to handle and lots of fun to fight! 🎣😎👍

Have fun, be safe and play nice when you can! Everyone’s out to have a good time… 👊

Requirements:

A solid foundation of knowledge in fly, spin and bait fishing as well as the equipment needed, experience with POS systems, and strong interpersonal skills. (Interpersonal skills is the only actual unconditional requirement as the right person could be trained on the rest.)

Assisting customers with gear, taking reservations, managing inventory, and maintaining a clean and inviting shop/work environment.

This varies a lot depending upon your work ethic, personality and ability to learn, but being “experienced in fly and/or spin fishing” is most certainly a major bonus as is some history in retail sales…

Employee discounts are nearly universal, alongside product discounts direct from many of our manufacturers and a very laid-back work environment despite the fact that it can and does get hectic at times. Pay raises will be quickly granted based on good performance as we are looking for long term employee(s). To “partially” quote my partner John from a text discussing this ad he said:

“It’s the shop environment, spending time with quality like-minded individuals, talking hunting and fishing all day…, quality of life, low pressure work environment… the list is long!!!”

So, please call the shop and talk with either Jake or Jimmy if you have any questions about the position. Applications can be picked up at the shop and résumés can be dropped off there or emailed to [email protected]
