Had a great opening of trout weekend with friends!
I’ve been spending most of my time trying to get things around my house in order and my gear in order for my trip up to Alaska for the summer. I am leaving this Monday and will stay thru August 26th this year…
My original plan was to take off on the 22nd, hit the SS Badger on over to Wisconsin then head up thru Canada eventually arriving in Anchorage where I would stick my bike on a barge over to King Salmon to keep it there for my summer and future summers then fly over myself. I had allotted 18 or so days for the trip…
While talking with my cousin Jim over this past weekend he mentioned (And I confirmed) that the barge out of Seattle cost the exact same as it would out of Anchorage (Exact same barge actually) and it would certainly be a lot easier on me (And my back) as well as avoiding a whole lot more cold. Plans have now officially changed! Not only do I shave 1500 miles off the trip and avoid “some” of the cold weather, but I can still take my sweet time now, see some friends and family along the way and even get to camp a week earlier to help with setting up for the season…
The “new” route more or less. There will be a few short detours to see some folks.
Come Monday I might even get to take the helm again on this awesome coal steamer!.
A shot from my last trip on it in 2015.
Anyway… Besides running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to get everything set in time we’ve had the annual river cleanup, (Short notice on graduation weekend gave us a low turnout, but we did make a difference! Thanks to all who helped out..) caught a few small fish, turned some big ones (And lost a dandy!) and had a blast with John and Fey one night and had a bunch of family up for my Aunt’s memorial this past weekend.
A few pics from the cleanup.
A little family time with the Fraley’s and Johnson’s.
Spent most of today doing the escort ride of the Michigan Vietnam Memorial Wall and the Michigan Middle Eastern Conflict Memorial Wall from the Newaygo Chapter of AMVET to the Baldwin Chapter. A local cop told me that when the first riders showed up to the finish he radioed back and the procession was 5 1/2 miles long. No idea how many bikes in total at this point, but I can tell you it was awesome and to whiteness the patriotism along the way was inspiring to say the least.
I was honored to serve my country when I did during the "Cold War", but even more honored to participate in this event honoring those that made the ultimate sacrifice for you and I with so many other veterans that served in times of war... Thanks for the invite fellas!!
A few shots from the day.
That’s about all I’ve got for you right now. This weekend is the Blessing Of The Bikes here in Baldwin and like most years I’ve got friends coming and lots to do besides the million other things I need to get done before Monday morning! ;^) Odds are I will not get another post up here on our web site again for a while, but I will be posting along the way during my journey on my Facebook page (Steven R Fraley) and will try to bring everyone up to speed at some point in Alaska.
Till next time, tight lines all!!
